What do you suppose would happen if the Schema possessed a spell book?
How do you suppose the power-hungry players would react? big_smile

Instead of sanity points that count down, why not have a madness score that build up?
Whenever madness exceeds any of your ability scores, take a -2 to that score and some sort of extra penalty.
When madness exceeds wisdom it screws up your perception of the world.
When madness exceeds intelligence it messes with your ability to organize your thoughts.
And when madness exceeds constitution you start suffering from psychosomatic illnesses.

My Carcosa campaign just fell apart and my con game was a disaster.
Meh. Have a random table for your armor:

I'm more interested in technology as magic items myself. I'm not talking about laser guns or robots. Even something like the Korean turtle-ship would make for an interesting magic item. It's just an improvement on existing technologies of the time, but it has this interesting mythos surrounding it. The way some people describe it makes it sound like some kind of legendary thing that wouldn't have been out of place in cosmic battles against demons or something... but nope, apparently it was real.
These things are said to have had fully covered deck with iron plates* to deflect attacks and large spikes to prevent boarding, and a dragon head at the bow that shot cannon fire or flames from the mouth.

*There is no solid evidence to suggest that turtle ships were iron-clad, but don't say that to a Korean citizen. Some people take a lot of nationalistic pride in the turtle ship.

Oh yeah, the ice.

Man, now I'm imagining some of these bodies being eroded over time by snow and hail. Some of the older corpses must be stripped to raw flesh.

So there must be a field of bodies impaled on stone stakes preserved for all time by... I'm assuming a mass graceful repose spell? I guess if that's the case, Zeke might be able to haphazard a guess as to which body is which. "This guy looks like a... Jake."

So once hell vomits forth, these impaled bodies will start writhing around and try to pull themselves off of the stakes?

There are some things I don't quite get about Death Frost Doom. This is likely result of some poor reading comprehension on my part, and these questions may have been answered numerous times already. If you could help me out a bit, it would be appreciated.

So... corpses

There are hundreds of corpses buried in the graveyard, right? These are the remains of people sacrificed by this horrible cult.
I'm guessing Zeke went down into the dungeon and just picked them up some place? Or did he go out to the field of hanged men or the field of impaled men depicted in the murals?

How does Zeke know which body goes with which headstone? Did the cult put toe tags on all its victims or something?

I felt that the die mechanic was a little cumbersome though. It did slow things down a little bit. We ended up rolling for damage dice only once per combat and letting those results stick through the whole fight.

The first half of the session was a really fun comedy of manners. Aloon was new to the world and couldn't speak the common language of "Babble" until he was able to obtain an alien translation module. The rest of the party was guiding him along and discussing how much he might fetch on the auction block.

The last half of the session was just combat, wilderness exploration, and a little bit of dungeon crawl. This part of the game just didn't flow as organically as the other part though. The level of disconnect reminded me of 4E. We still had fun though. I'm going to need to work on my DM'ing skills here.

We all had a lot of fun, but there were a few disappointments.

Pete was sad that his ulfire-skinned sorcerer "The Black Wallet" didn't get to do more magical stuff. He was expecting to summon random demons in every battle, but he did have fun swinging his two-handed sword around and acting as the party scholar (I let everybody pick 'general skills' from the Rules Cyclopedia.)

Adam was sad that his green-skinned brother of the skull "The Green Jewel" wasn't as powerful as he was expecting, but he did have fun picking enemies off from a distance with his needle rifle.

Micah seemed sad that his orange-skinned hoplite "Mamodese the Bull" didn't get to kill enough things, but he seemed pleased with his  business as a slaver.

Wade was pleased as punch. He was playing a level 4 monk "Aloon, the cream-colored-man" transported in from the AD&D campaign (called to Carcosa by a botched summoning ritual conducted by The Black Wallet.) He killed an 8-hit-die spawn of shub-niggurath in one hit (we were using the Carcosa die mechanic) and he had a bunch of pet dinosaurs.

I was sad that the game wasn't fatal enough. The only PC deaths occurred during character creation (the brother of the skull). Between Mamodese using his white slaves as bait and decoys to lure in enemies, Green Jewel picking off the weak ones with his needle rifle and whittling down the strong ones with poisoned needles, Aloon decapitating foes with his bare fists, and a bunch of domesticated velociraptors running around, the party was able to massacre everything I threw at them.
They killed six purple men, a hulking brute of a mutant, two giant spiders, and an amoeboid spawn of shub-niggurath.

Thanks! I love that medusa idea.

So I'm going to start this game on April 7th.
I've already recruited a few players. I know most of them from an AD&D game I was playing in up until recently (we finished the adventure module in January).
One of the guys wants his AD&D monk transported into the world John Carter style. I think I'll allow it.

I just got back from my vacation and I've just moved into my huge (by Korean standards) new apartment.
There's enough space in here for a D&D game, I'm close enough to Seoul for people to come out and play, and there are some people around here that are interested.
Maybe I'll share the game with the world via podcast or something.

So here's what want to do with Carcosa:

1) Convert Keep on the Borderlands to the Carcosa setting.
The Keep in question will be changed to 'Cave Town' though. The +1 plate armor that every single NPC seems to wear around town will be turned into powered armor with dinosaur skull pauldrons.
The goblins and other humanoid monsters of the Caves of Chaos will be changed into tribes of chaotic humans. The minotaur, owlbear, ogre, and medusa will all be changed into spawn of shub-niggurath.

2) Use luck points from the old Conan Unchained! supplement so fighters will have some interesting stuff to do. And I want to use the old orgy rules for recharging luck points.

3) Hack Fate zones into D&D, because I like to be really strict about positioning in combat but without using a battle mat and miniatures.

4) I want to use music from the following bands in my playlist:
Earth
Hawkwind
The Sword
Black Pyramid
Dark Quarterer
Emerson Lake & Palmer
Joe Meek & The Blue Men
Moondog
Smoking Spore
Simon and Garfunkel

Alright, so here's some questions for you guys:

1) Should I tone down the number of magic items/alien artifacts in the keep?
2) Where should I set the keep and the caves on the big hex map?
3) Any suggestions for converting the caves of chaos?
4) What should I do with that weird hermit guy?
5) Should I change the lizard men into deep ones?

6) Should I use luck points? Are they too meta-gamey? Are fighters cool enough in Carcosa without that extra help?

7) Can you recommend some music for my Carcosa playlist? Make it weird.

Well, here's some bands I've been listening to within the hour that could work:
Liturgy, Sub Rosa, Sol Invictus, The Liars

If you are getting your books sent to South Korea or Japan or Thailand or whatever, get them shipped by air. Not by boat.
Pirates will steal your gaming books and offer them as sacrifices to their strange oriental gods.

I haven't read the Arduin Grimoire yet, but I'll look into it. Thanks. smile

Here's a thought that occurred to me while watching Star Trek (season 3, episode 14 "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield")

Can a person in Carcosa have two skin colors? One on the left side of his body, a different one on the right, split down the middle?
How does that happen?
Would the Snake-Men have sought after that as a valuable trait? Or would they would they have engineered xenophobia and reproductive incompatibility into the human race in order to prevent that type of mixing from occurring?

How does a thing like this affect rituals?

And furthermore...

Can a person be of mixed genders on each half? Male on one side, female on the other? Hermaphroditic? Self-fertilizing and hermaphroditic?
How does that affect rituals? Does it make the individual more versatile as a sacrifice, being usable for a wider variety of rituals than otherwise? Or does it result in catastrophic failure?

Ever see that movie Zardoz?
Can a character age on one side of their body and remain young on the other? What does that do?

I should have ordered priority like I did with Vornheim (I received that within a week).

I was about to ask about shipping times myself, but I understand you don't ship a lot of stuff out to my neck of the woods...

Two weeks to a month then?

You've heard of baby Jesus?
Well, this is baby Nyarlathotep.

This exquisitely crafted idol of the Chaos Child was recently unearthed in ruins of an old temple in the Luminescent Fen. Apparently the great iconoclasm wasn't quite thorough enough. Strange that the holy vandals would neglect to smash such a relic. It's hard to miss with its splendid luster and blasphemous aura.

The treasure-hunting ladies were sitting in a tavern, excitedly discussing their recent financial gain when all of a sudden...

...somebody tipped the beer over!

That's a bad omen. They say that when you go to hell, the devil drowns you in every drop of alcohol you ever spilled.

"Yeah, go ahead and be more careless. We can afford to wash the floor with our hard earned money like that!"

"It was an accident you penny-pinching bitch!"

"Knock it off you two. We're rich now. Rich beyond our wildest dreams! We can just buy another drink."

The statue quietly chuckles.

...That concludes this installment of Vito's amateur fiction hour. Tune in next week for...

Electric Dinosaur!

An article about monsters.

Hi, my name is Kevin. I'm a 25 year old artist and English teacher living in South Korea.

My interest in gaming began when I saw an ad in a comic book for Rifts. My religious parents didn't really approve of the hobby though, so I didn't get to play role playing games very often back then. When I did, I had to keep it a secret. My first gaming experience was with Mentzer basic at a friend's house. The first game I ever owned was Tenchi Muyo RPG (using the Tri-Stat system). I had to keep it hidden under my mattress as my step-dad was the type of person to burn rpg books. I never got to play the game;  my step-dad found the book and took it with him to the shooting range.

I got back into gaming during college with third edition D&D, but I didn't like it very much.
After a two year gaming lapse I got back in with World of Darkness, Fudge, Fate, and fourth edition D&D.
I've started gaming a lot more since coming to Korea. I play in an AD&D game twice a month. I run Moldvay basic for my students every once in a while. I've played in D&D 4E and Call of Cthulhu games, and I've run a game of oldschool Traveller.

I'd like to run or play in a game of Lamentations of the Flame princess, but it's really hard to find other gamers around here. I'm living in a backwoods town called Jochiwon you see. There are only about five other foreigners in this town, and none of them are interested in D&D. I have get on a train for two hours to get to where the gamers are at.
I am moving closer to Seoul sometime in February though; it should be easier for me to find games then. I really want to play Carcosa, Paranoia, Stormbringer, Traveller, and Gamma World.
